GARAGE NOTES

Keep your battery ready between rides

A sensible routine for inspection, charging and storage based on your battery manufacturer’s instructions.

Inspect before charging

Check the case, terminals and cables. If the case is cracked, swollen or leaking, stop and follow the manufacturer’s disposal guidance. Clean and secure connections using the vehicle manual’s procedure. Wear the protection recommended by the battery manufacturer.

Use the right charger

Confirm the battery voltage, chemistry and recommended charging settings. A maintainer must be compatible with the specific battery. Follow the manufacturer’s connection order and charge in a suitable, ventilated location.

Do not choose a charging current from a generic internet rule when the battery documentation provides an explicit limit. Read both the charger and battery instructions.

Plan for longer storage

Vehicle electronics can continue drawing power when the ATV is parked. Follow your owner’s manual on disconnecting or removing the battery, and follow the battery maker’s storage-temperature and recharge guidance.

Record when you stored and checked the battery. Inspection and charging intervals depend on chemistry, temperature and the product instructions; there is no universal schedule for every battery.

Before your next ride

Inspect cable routing, retaining hardware and terminal covers. Reconnect according to the owner’s manual and confirm that the battery is secured. If starting remains weak after proper charging, investigate the battery, cables and charging system rather than repeatedly trying to start.
